Who needs VEP?
Most probably you, if you drive a non-Malaysian car.
Or more specifically, “all foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia by land from Singapore”, including private and commercial ones. Embassy and government vehicles are not exempt as well.
Quick steps
Do a bunch of admin work to register online yourself, or arrow someone else to do it. (You will need your Touch N’ Go eWallet app for this).
Get your VEP RFID tag - you can ask them to send it over, or go JB’s collection centre and collect it yourself
Complete a second set of admin tasks
Attach the RFID tag to your car (do not put it on any metal parts)
Show evidence of this, and wait for your tag to be activated
Done! You can now travel to Malaysia without problems for the next 5 years.
What happens if you don't have the VEP?
You may be fined up to RM2,000 (US$425) or jailed for up to six months … not an ideal ending for a weekend getaway.
FAQ for special scenarios and worriers
Q1. Can I transfer the VEP to my new car?
No. Do Step 1 to 5 again.
Q2. What if my tag spoils?
Depends on how it is damaged.
Tag stolen/ lost/ damaged in accident
Pay admin fees, update vehicle status, show the police report to the Road Transport Department during tag collection
Faulty tag
FREE replacement
You removed or tampered with the tag
Pay for the new tag
So.. you have the tag, but what is this tag for?
Familiar with the ERP? RFID tag is its Malaysian version, linked to your Touch N’ Go eWallet. If you use RFID lanes on Malaysian highways, you can pay for road and toll fees.
The VEP system also updates the foreign vehicle database for the police - showing your latest saman (traffic summons) and traffic violations (if any).
